External Power to Vin has a series Diode type M7 which is rated at 1A continuous at 55C , 30A surge current, 1000V
 
  The YourDuino Basic Robot Kit connects the Motor Driver to Vin and Gnd, so the Motor Driver current flows through PC Board Traces and diode type M7.
 
 ANECDOTE: ("Drone" Arduino Forum: ) It's worth noting that I have about a thousand devices in the field drawing from 1.25A to 2A @12V through the Arduino Vin pin (to a shield), and none of them have burned out any traces or melted any pins in the Arduino =)
